Abstract
540,915. Aliphatic acids and their anhydrides. GROOMBRIDGE, W. H. May 4, 1940, No. 8031. [Class 2 (iii)] In the production of aliphatic acids and their anhydrides by the oxidation of aldehydes with oxygen, the aldehyde and oxygen are introduced into the re-action zone in the proportion of at least four molecules of aldehyde for each molecule of oxygen. The catalyst is preferably a copper, nickel or cobalt salt. The re-action may be effected at 50-75‹C in an organic solvent for the acid and anhydride, but in which water is insoluble such as a hydrocarbon. Specifications 401,269 and 510,959 are referred to.
