Abstract
1313787 3,5-Dimethylphenol RUTGERSWERKE AG 24 July 1970 [12 Nov 1969] 36039/70 Heading C2C A process for the production of 3,5-dimethylbenzene sulphonic acid by isomerization of 2,4- dimethylbenzene sulphonic acid comprises heating said 2,4-dimethylbenzene sulphonic acid at a temperature of from 150‹ to 185‹ C. for from 1 to 3 hours in the presence of 65 to 95% sulphuric acid. 3,5-Dimethyl phenol is produced by subsequently hydrolysing the 3,5-dimethyl benzene sulphonic acid produced. Examples are furnished.
