Abstract
1,163,436. Bis-(2-pyridyl) oxalate. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 6 Sept., 1966, No. 39799/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C4] Oxalic acid anhydride or ester compounds suitable as components of a chemiluminescent composition (see Division C4) include bis-(2- pyridyl) oxalate made by catalytic re-arrangement in acid solution of a bis-(1,2-dihydro-2- oxo-1-pyridyl) glyoxal, where the pyridyl groups may be unsubstituted or substituted. Preparation of the glyoxal.-2-Hydropyridine is dissolved in 1,2-dimethoxyethane. To the stirred solution are added oxalylchloride and triethylamine. The product is evaporated to dryness and treated with chloroform to produce a white solid which is recrystallized in benzene. Acid catalysis to oxalate.-Portions of the glyoxal dissolved in triethylphosphate are treated with methanesulphonic, phosphoric and hydrochloric acids respectively. Infra-red spectra indicate a conversion to oxalate, in 5 minutes, of 30% with the methanesulphonic acid and 5% with the others.
