Abstract

Hydrocarbon substituted acetic acids are produced by reacting at 0‹ to 15‹ C. a compound capable of forming carbonium ions with vinylidene chloride in 80-90% sulphuric acid. Compounds forming carbonium ions are alcohols, their esters with inorganic or organic acids or the olefines on which they are based, which, under the reaction conditions form stable carbonium ions but whose stability and steric structure is such that an addition can take place. The examples describe the preparation of t-butyl acetic acid, #-methyl and #-phenyl hydrocinnamic acid, adamantylacetic acid, and 2-norbornylacetic acid.
