Abstract

1409321 Unsaturated acids and esters ZOECON CORP 1 Nov 1972 50379/72 Heading C2C Unsaturated hydroxy acids and esters of formula wherein Z is hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy or alkylthio (1-6 C), Z<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or with Z a carbon-carbon bond, each of m and n is independently zero or 1, 2 or 3, each of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> is lower alkyl, R<SP>4</SP> is alkyl, each of R, R<SP>12</SP>, R<SP>13</SP> and R<SP>14</SP> is independently hydrogen or alkyl (1-6 C) and R<SP>7</SP> is hydrogen, alkyl (1-6 C), cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl, are prepared by reacting a ketone with an α-halo ester, where X is bromo or chloro and R<SP>71</SP> is alkyl (1-6 C), aryl or aralkyl, in the presence of zinc in an inert organic solvent. The hydroxy acid may be dehydrated using e.g. thionyl chloride, phosphorus tin chloride and phosphorous oxychloride. The esters can be hydrolysed with alkali hydroxide to the free acids. Examples describe the preparation of methyl 2,3,7,11- tetramethyl-3-hydroxydodec-4-enoate and -2,4- dienoate and ethyl 3-hydroxy-3,7,11-trimethyldodeca-4-enoate and -2,4-dienoate and many other compounds. The diene compounds are useful as insect control agents which may be in compositions with conventional additives.
