1,232,317. Carboxylic acids and/or esters. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 10 Nov., 1969 [30 Dec., 1968], No. 61637/68. Heading C2C. Carboxylic acids and/or esters are obtained by reacting an ether of formula R<SP>1</SP>-O-R<SP>2</SP> wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> represent organic radicals, with CO in the presence of an acid catalyst comprising a mixture of BF 3 , H 3 PO 4 and a compound of formula R<SP>3</SP>OH wherein R<SP>3</SP> represents H or an organic radical, BF 3 and the compound R<SP>3</SP>OH being used in a molar ratio in the range of from 1 : 1 to 1 : 2.3. Mixtures of CO with inert gases may be used as the CO source. The process may be carried out batchwise or continuously. An example is given in which methyl pivalate and pivalic acid are prepared.
