Abstract

540,774. Regulating ; carburetters pumps AERO ENGINES, Ltd., and HALLIDAY, G. F. May 30, 1940, No. 9497. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii) and 7 (vi)] [Also in Group XXVI] Means for bringing a super-charger into action, for taking-off of aircraft, or a rapid climb, also brings into use a fuel of highoctane value ; or in Diesel engines, a fuel of higher grade or for preventing detonation. The Figure shows the invention applied to an engine having a carburetter 9 connected by a valve 16 either to the intake 14 of a super-charger 3 supplying the manifold 13 through an outlet 17, or directly to the manifold 13, the valve 16 being operated together with the clutch drive of the super-charger, through linkage 15, 5, 6, 7 and lever 8. Fuel is delivered to the carburretter by a pump 18 supplied from tanks 20, 21 with either of the two fuels according to the position of a valve 22 actuated from a lever 24. The lever 8 may also actuate a piston 34 which, through fluid means, advances the ignition at 29 through a piston 35 when the special fuel is in use, adjusts the pitch of the propeller through a control unit 31, and operates the valve 22 through a piston 36. The clutch may comprise a centrifugal or hydraulic coupling-member to prevent its engagement below a certain engine speed.
