Abstract

540,340. Vehicle lamps. NOTEK ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and HINDS, R. P. H. May 14, 1940 Nos. 8648 and 11431. [Class 75 (iv)] A masking device fitted to a vehicle head lamp comprises a plate 4 secured in front of the lens or glass 15 and formed with a rectangular horizontal aperture 5 below a forwardly projecting horizontal plate 6 to give a normal driving beam and a larger aperture 16 normally covered by a plate 17 which can be turned about pivots 20 to give a driving beam during fog. A horizontal plate 10 may be provided below the aperture 5 in alignment with a forwardly projecting portion, 18 of the plate 17 when the plate 17 is in the closed position. In the raised position the portion 18 obstructs the aperture 5. The plates 6, 10 are formed with flanges 7, 11 bridged at their ends to form a rectangular gap 12 slightly below the aperture 5. The plate 6 may also be formed at each end with downwardly directed flanges 8 which carry the pivots 20 and may engage frictionally lugs 19 on the plate 17. The glass 15 may be fluted to give a spreading beam and a glare shield 21 may be supported by twisted metal strips 23 in front of the lamp bulb 22.
