540,270. Making compound forms. POKORNY, E. A. June 12, 1940, Nos. 10236 and 10836. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion.-A hard carbide facing is applied to an iron or steel or other metal base by first coating with a layer of cobalt, nickel, &c. which will alloy or combine with both the base metal and carbide, and then applying the carbide thereon by electric arc welding. Aircraft parts and armour piercing projectiles may thus be provided with a hard facing. Electric arc welding may be effected with a carbon or graphite electrode. A carbide of tungsten, tantalum, molybdenum, chromium, or titanium may be used.
