Abstract

540,121. Starting discharge lamps. FERRANTI, Ltd., CHILCOT, A. L., MILLER, J. L., and ATKINSON, L. May 25, 1940, No. 9240. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] In a thermal switch suitable for use in a discharge lamp circuit as described in Specification 537,573, a bimetal strip 1, when heated, bends so as to bring a contract 3 into engagement with a contact 6 on a spring strip 4, further movement causing a contact 7 on the spring strip 4 to move away from a fixed contact 8. The strips 1, 4 are mounted on rods 2, 5 supported by a glass stem sealed into an evacuated envelope. A carbonized nickel sheet 10 surrounds the member 4 on three sides and is attached to a nicked strip welded to the fixed end of the bimetal strip 1 and serves to cool the bimetal strip rapidly. The bimetal strip may be heated by the radiation from the discharge lamp.
