Abstract
539,996. Forming coherent masses from powdered metals. MALLORY METALLURGICAL PRODUCTS, Ltd. Sept. 4, 1940, No. 13849. Convention date, March 19, 1940. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Groups XXXVII, XXIV and XXXIV] A contact plate or disc or other facing element such as a clutch facing or a bearing is composed of a pressed and sintered mixture of one or more metal powders and carbon, graphite or carbonaceous material, one face being substantially free from the carbon. Fig. 6 shows a contact disc, the lower face of which is free from carbon and may therefore be readily attached to a backing member. The upper face constitutes the contact surface. Metal powders consisting of one or more of the following metals may be used for the composition:-silver, copper, nickel, cadmium, tungsten, molybdenum. One specified composition is 95 per cent. silver and 5 per cent. graphite. The contact is made by mixing the materials, pressing them into the desired-shape and then heating in an oxidizing atmosphere with one surface protected from the atmosphere by resting on a graphite slab or by other means. At the exposed surface, the graphite combines with the oxygen and escapes as a gas, leaving a surface entirely of silver.
