Abstract

A sintered material used as an electrical contact comprises a sintered mass of graphite and a composite of silver and a metal oxide, preferably CdO or SnO2. The metal oxide may be added as a powder or a suitable silver alloy such as Ag-9% Cd may be internally oxidized to form the dispersed oxide. The oxide powder should be less than 5 microns and the graphite less than 10 microns. The powder mixture contains 1-10% graphite based on the weight of Ag and metal oxide and is pressed and sintered at 800 DEG -900 DEG C in nitrogen and then coined and de-burred. Alternatively a layer of Ag powder with a superimposed layer of Ag-metal oxide-C may be compacted together, sintered under nitrogen, coined and de-burred to form an integral contact with an Ag base which is soldered to a support of copper, brass or bronze.
