Abstract
833,150. Friction clutches. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. April 21, 1958 [April 24, 1957], No. 12598/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Groups II and XXXIV] In a friction article of the type described in Specification 740,820, wherein the ceramic metallic friction material is provided with a reinforcing cup having a base or walls forming a surrounding laterally-extending side, the elimination of the walls with their tendency under certain conditions, to score the other friction member is achieved by forming the friction article with a carrier member 22, a perforate backing member 20, a bottom layer 18 of copper, copper alloy, iron or other powdered material, according to the composition of layer 16, and compacting the assembly under pressure, so that the layer 18 makes a firm bond in the perforations of backing member 20. In one process of manufacture the layers 18 and 16 originate as loose metal powder, are compacted at 40,000-100,000 p.s.i., sintered at 1200- 2050‹ F. and the article is then coined at pressures up to 100,000 p.s.i. Various possible compositions of the layers 16 and 18 are listed having as principal ingredients copper, mullite, silica, bismuth, lead, molybdenum, nickel, iron, tin and graphite. In the friction article, which may be made round, segmental or rectangular, as desired, the layer 18 may be built up at its periphery to form a ridge 63 which surrounds the layer 16 and gives some lateral support, to prevent it breaking away at an excessive rate, but being of such hardness that it will not score or otherwise damage the opposing friction material.
