Abstract

537,762. Thermionic valves. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 5, 1940, No. 6190. Convention date, April 7, 1939. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group. XXII] In a thermionic valve with a metal envelope 10 which is closed by a metal header 11 carrying the electrode structure, the joint between the envelope 10 and header is used before it is sealed as the means for evacuation of the valve. The lower end of the envelope is coned and the header has a corresponding flange 27 formed as a trough in which a ring of solder 33 is placed ; the two parts are mounted in a tube 30 for evacuation and are thereafter moved together, the joint being heated to effect the sealing. The solder may be attached to the coned end of the envelope instead of using the ring 33. The heating is obtained by applying alternating current to a plate 43 arranged in a centring tube 35 drawn on the header; this plate is of tantalum coated on one or both sides with barium or strontium oxide, which coating after sealing is used as the getter. The plate may be inclined to prevent the getter vapour entering the envelope. The tube 35 has a key way 36 for ensuring correct position in the valve socket, and acts as a shield between the anode and grid leads. Specification 503,076 is referred to.
