Abstract

536,780. Endless - track vehicles. KNAPP, D. E. J. Jan. 13, 1940, No. 788. [Class 79 (i)] An endless-track vehicle is provided with retractable ground-gripping elements s passing through the track and adapted to be advanced automatically to engage the ground or withdrawn out of engagement with the ground. In the construction shown the tracks 1 pass over end sprockets 2, 3 mounted on the vehicle frame 4, and each track link 5 is provided with a sliding spike 7 normally retracted by a spring 8. A vertically-sliding frame comprising a top rail 19, bars 21, and a lower cam rail 20 slides in guides 22, 23 on the vehicle frame and is normally pressed upwards by springs (not shown) so that the spikes 7 are not affected by the cam rail 20. The frame 19, 20, 21 can be lowered by a hand-wheel 16 through gearing 15, 11 and cranks 9 and when this is done each spike 7, as it passes under the cam rail 20, is forced out through its track link into the ground and gives greater adhesion on soft or icy ground. When hard ground is reached again, the cam rail is raised again and the spikes remain retracted in their links.
