Abstract

536,610. Umbrellas etc.; electric battery lamps. BINGHAM, J. H. Oct. 17, 1939, Nos. 28039 and 33013. [Class 134] [Also in Group XI] An electric battery lamp 17 is housed in a hollow casing between the lower part 10b and the upper part or handle 10a of a walking-stick the casing being provided with apertures 22, 23 which are disposed nearer the end of the stick than the bulb so that the light is directed towards the ground in the normal use of the stick. An internal or external adjustable sleeve may be provided for varying the size or disposition or colour of the light emitting apertures. The handle 10a has a metal ferrule 14 connected by a cross-pin 25 to a metal plug 24 and spring 26, and slides in a socket 13 on the upper part of the casing 12. The lamp holder 32 is insulated from the lamp casing 17, and contact between the two is established by a switch 20. A spring 26 contacts with the upper end of the battery 29 intermittently to complete the lamp circuit each time the stick is brought in contact with the ground. The handle may be locked in such a position, that the lamp circuit is controlled by the switch 20 and the parts may be arranged so that the movement apart completes the lamp circuit. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the holder 45 for the battery 43 and lamp 44 is held by springs 46 in a hollow metal casing 40 which is threaded on the upper end of the stick 10 and has light emitting apertures 47, 51 disposed below the lamp and covered by translucent sleeve which may be coloured to give different coloured lights from the apertures. A tab 48 depends from the holder to enable the holder to be withdrawn. The switch consists of a spring 69 carried by a plunger 56 which has limited movement under the action of a spring 63 and stop member 67 in a metal thimble 55 mounted in the handle knob 42 and connected electrically to the casing by screws 53. The plunger is actuated by a knob 58 with a thimble 57 having a cross-piece 62 engaging the shallower of two recesses 60 provided at the end of a block 59 on an extension of the plunger rod. When the cross-piece engages the deeper of the recesses, movement of the knob 58 does not effect closure of the circuit. The plunger carries a collar 64 with a pin 65 guided in an axial slot in the thimble 55, and the slot may be provided with a lateral extension so as to hold the switch in circuit closing position by a bayonet joint engaging movement. Specifications 278,158, 284,076, 339,082, [all in Class 134], and 369,793 are referred to.
