Abstract
536,505. Wireless receiving apparatus; inductances. JOHNSON LABORATORIES, Inc. March 19, 1940, No. 5099. Convention date, April 10, 1939. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXXV] To improve tracking in a permeability tuning arrangement for a superheterodyne receiver the signal frequency coil 5 and oscillator coil 18 are constructed as shown in Fig. 2. The coils are mounted on insulating tubes 27 and have identical dust cores 6 simultaneously slidable by means 28. Signal coil 5 is uniformly spaced while oscillator coil 18 comprises closely spaced sections 18a, 18c separated by a loosely spaced section 18b. Section 18a is of the same length as 5 but has fewer turns. Movement of cores 6 tunes signal coil 5 over a range of frequencies and oscillator coil 18 over a narrower range of higher frequencies, to give a constant difference. With the cores withdrawn, alignment is established by means of adjustable condensers (not shown) and, is maintained during the upper portion of the frequency range by the fact that as the inductance of 18a is increasing, the inductance of 18a is decreasing due to withdrawal of the core 6. During the lower part of the frequency range tracking is secured by having the signal core 6 earthed so that the increased capacity with coil 5 accelerates the lowering of the resonant frequency of the signal frequency circuit. Specifications 366,475 and 455,573, [Group XXXVI], are referred to.
