Abstract
526,464. Variable inductances. FERRANTI, Ltd., SEARBY, N. H., and NEILL, V. A. March 17, 1939, No. 8506. [Class 38 (ii)] One pair of a set of variable inductances for tuning a superheterodyne receiver manually or by means of push buttons comprises a paper former 5 carrying an aerial coil 3 and, on an extra former 6, an oscillator coil 1. Corresponding dust iron cores 4, 2 are mounted on a threaded rod 7 and are spaced apart by a compressed paper tube 11 and a rubber tube 12 which allows a certain amount of compression by means of nuts 13 for adjusting the separation of the cores. Pre-adjustment of the positions of the cores relative to the coils is effected by turning rod 7 in a screwed bush 8 mounted on the chassis of the receiver. Coil 1 has a lower ratio of highest to lowest frequency than coil 3, and to facilitate ganging at all frequencies coil 1 is made of larger diameter than coil 3 while core 2 is made shorter than coil 4. Alternatively coil 1 is shorter than coil 3 and the permeability of core 2 is less than that of core 4. Specification 520,552 is referred to.
