Abstract
536,244. Air-raid shelters HARMINC M. A. P. Dec. 11, 1939, No. 31950. [Class 20 (i)j An air-raid shelter is formed of precast concrete units each comprising a closed hoop or frame having a vaulted portion and a straight bottom portion extending between the lower ends therof, the frames being connected together face to face to form an extended shelter. The closed frames 1 each comprise inclined sides 1d, terminating in flattened triangular portions 1c. and a transverse bottom portion 1a which rests upon the ground. The faces are provided with interfitting projections and recesses 1d, 1e respectively and the sections are bolted together by through bolts. The end closure sections are panels and may be provided with observation apertures 9 and with doors 4 having bevelled edges to engage correspondingly bevelled seats provided in the end panels. The frames may each be provided with a seat 11 and a lifting eye 13. In a modification, each frame 14 is provided with curved stiffening members 17 joining the ends of the base member 16 and conical wall portions 18 extending from this stiffening member to the apex either integral with it or applied as closures, so that when two such sections are opposed, they form a complete shelter ; the sections are joined by means of resilient bands 24, 25 disposed in recesses around the sections.
