Abstract

536,033. Toggles. LESTER, N., and LESTER ENGINEERING CO. Nov. 14, 1939, No. 30032. [Class 80 (iii)] Consists in means for relieving the pivot pins of a toggle of shearing stress when the toggle is in the extended or dead-centre position. The toggle comprises a fixed member 1 and a movable member 2, these members being connected by links 5, 11 pivoted by pins 6, 12, 21. Pivoted on pin 12 is a link 14 connected by a pin 16 to a hydraulic cylinder 18 movable over a fixed piston. Hardened bearing surfaces are provided at 26 on member 1, 25, 24 on link 11 and 23 on member 2 and when the dead-centre position is reached these bearing surfaces abut one another and the force is transmitted by compression only through the member 1, link 11 and member 2, thus relieving the pivot pins of shear stress. The abutting surfaces of 25, 26 may be inclined so as to produce a wedging action.
