749,367. Clamps. SPEED TOOLS, Ltd. Feb. 3, 1954 [Feb. 3, 1953], No. 3071/53. Class 61 [Also in Group V] In a clamp, press or like device having a clamping or like member operable by toggle mechanism, the clamping member comprising a plunger mounted for sliding movement to and fro along its longitudinal axis, the toggle mechanism is operable to lock the plunger in each of two positions. As shown, the toggle mechanism comprises a triangular operating link 25 pivoted at 24 to the base member of a clamp, a connecting link 31 being pivoted at 28 to the link 25 and at 32 to the end of the plunger 20. The link 25 comprises a pair of spaced plates between which the stem 33 of the operating handle 34 is welded, the free end of the handle being curved away from the longitudinal axis of the plunger. The two locked positions of the plunger are shown in Figs. 1 and 4. The base member of the clamp comprises a pair of spaced plates provided with fixing flanges as at 14, along one or more edges, the plates supporting at one end a hardened steel bearing block 18 in which the plunger 20 is slidably mounted. The ends of the plates remote from the block 18 abut each other, the plates of the link 25 being mounted one on each side of the abutting portions. The plunger may be of round, square or other cross section and have the face enlarged so that the device may be used as a press.
