Abstract

534,414. Connecting-rods. DONALDSON, J. S. Jan. 15, 1940. No. 858. [Class 122 (i)] A ball-and-socket connection joining a piston 10 and connecting-rod 18 comprises a lower bearing member 16 mounted in a tubular extension 12 of the piston head, and an upper bearing portion 20 which screws into a threaded socket in the extension 12. The bearer 16 and the extension 12 are formed at their upper parts with annular unthreaded wedging surfaces 22, 23, Fig. 4, which are inclined at slightly different angles so that when the bearer 20 is screwed home the surfaces 22, 23 are wedged tightly together with a slight upsetting of the adjacent metal. The bearer 20 may be formed of two parts one of which is not screwed, and oil passages 30, 31, 32 are formed in the parts 12, 20 so as to lubricate the ball. Sockets 24, 25 for giving hold to wrenches are formed in the member 20 and piston head respectively.
