Abstract

574,608. Valves. WADDELL, H. J. Aug. 16, 1943, No. 13297. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXIV] A valve plug 6 has a threaded extension 16 screwed into a piston 14 disposed in a lubricant chamber 5 and prevented from rotating so that it moves either up or down when the plug is turned, the arrangement being such that when the piston moves upwardly the wedgeshaped plates 13 move likewise into firm engagement with the wall of the valve socket. The piston also effects a circulation of lubricant from the upper end of the chamber 5 through longitudinal grooves 23, Fig. 2, in the wall of the socket to an annular groove 24 in the upper part of the plug, and thence down the longitudinal grooves 25 in the plug. From the grooves 25 a part of the lubricant flows into channels 25a formed in the opposed faces of the wedge-shaped plates 13 and the plug 6, while the remainder flows through transverse holes in the plug into the bore 26, and thence to the lower end of the chamber 5.
