Abstract

533,956. Glass manufacture. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (Ferguson, J.). July 22, 1939, No. 21328. [Class 56] Glass is made from a batch which consists of glass-forming oxides and is free from any ingredients, such as carbonaceous compounds or hydrates, that form gaseous products during melting. The materials used are such that the melting of the batch produces no endothermic chemical reactions and forms a weight of glass substantially equal to the weight of the batch. The sand should be dried to prevent the formation of water vapour, and calcined borax may be used to introduce boron and part of the sodium into the glass. Felspar can be used as a source of silicon, aluminium, sodium, and sometimes calcium and potassium. Boro-silicate glass can be made by melting sand, felspar, and calcined borax. Other suitable ingredients and examples of batches are given in the Specification.
