Abstract

533,806. Changing signs. EQUIPMENT & ENGINEERING CO.. Ltd., and SWIFT, H. B. Nov. 28, 1939, No. 30941. [Class 3 (i)] A non-endless display band is wound from one roller to another by a oneway clutch device operated by a cord, chain, strap &c. An arm 7 freely mounted on a shaft 3 carries one or more non - symmetrical pivoted gripping members 9 to the outer side of which the cord &c. 10 is attached. On pulling the cord by a handle 11 the member 9 is turned till it grips frictionally the rim of a drum 5 fixed on the shaft 3, and rotates same against the pull of a restoring spring 13. Repeated pulls on the handle 11 thus rotate the shaft 3 step - by - step, and the rotation is communicated through a squared end &c. to the band roller. Stops 12, which may be cushioned, limit the swing of the arm 7 in both directions. A similar device is provided for the lower roller, but arranged to impart rotation in the opposite direction. Idle pulleys 15 guide the cord &c. 10 to any suitable point, and brakes may be provided on the rollers to tension the band. In a modification both cords 10 may act on the same drum, in opposite directions, the drum shaft being geared to the roller spindles. In a further form the friction drive is replaced by a spring-freed pawl acting on a toothed wheel on the shaft 5.
