Abstract

533,760. Welding. SPURWAY, F. G. Nov. 24, 1939, No. 30683. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1938. [Class 83 (iv)] In resistance welding the longitudinal seam of a tube formed from bright or black stock, the current passes longitudinally of the tube from one electrode to a second and also from the second to a third which is in two parts so arranged as to pass the current also transversely of the seam. The roller electrodes 7, 8, which are in direct contact with the team, are each connected to one of the closed phase points of an open delta secondary 6 of a three-phase transformer provided with a tapped primary 5. The third electrode 9 consists of two components 12, 13 insulated from each other and arranged on opposite sides of the seam and connected to the open phase points of the secondary. Insulated pressure rollers 14 are arranged slightly in rear of the electrodes 7, 8, whilst those adjacent to 9 are directly underneath the weld and provide the upsettling pressure. The seam when travelling from electrode 7 to 8 may be preheated to 700‹C. and from 8 to 9 to 1250‹C. The seam in advance of the electrode 9 may be descaled by steam.
