533,545. Moisture-proofing; electric insulation. ASHLEY, P. G., CRADICK, M. J., DUNTON, A. R., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Oct. 25, 1939, No. 28670. [Class 140] In order to improve the moisture resisting characteristics of laminated-tube and like insulators comprising cellulosic fibrous material, such as paper, bonded with shellac or varnishes having a base of synthetic resin, the tubes after wrapping are impregnated with polystyrene preferably that known as "Styrol" or "Distrene" dissolved in a solvent such as benzol, and at a pressure of 2000lb. per square inch, the solvent being then driven off under pressure and the insulator finally oven dried. The insulator may be vacuum-treated prior to impregnation, and may be finished with a coating of moisture-resisting varnish.
