Abstract

532,370. Carrotting fur. STEVENS, A. H. (Non- Mercuric Carrot Co.). Aug. 28, 1939, No. 24697. [Class 76] Fur is carrotted by treatment, e.g. by brushing or spraying the skin or cut fur, with an aqueous solution containing a volatile hydrolysing acid selected from nitric, formic and acetic acids, and a volatile oxidizer selected from the group consisting of hydrogen peroxide, organic peroxides, and organic peracids, the hydrolysing acid having a hydrogenion concentration equivalent at least to that represented by a concentration of 11-12 per cent. by weight of nitric acid of approximately 63 per cent. technical, the solution being substantially free from non- volatile carrotting agents, and causing the volatilization of the carrotting solution on the fur. Optimum conditions are obtained working with a pH between 1.4 and 0.8 (corresponding to a concentration of 11-12 per cent. to 20 per cent. of technical 63 per cent. nitric acid). As oxidizer it is preferable to use hydrogen peroxide in the order of from 4 to 8 per cent. by weight, in which case it is preferable to add a minute quantity of some stabilizing substance such as urea, citric acid, sodium metaphosphate or sodium salicylate, but organic peroxides e.g. of the type R-O-O-H such as CH 3 -O-OH, or R-O-O-R such as C 2 H 5 -O-O-C 2 H 5 , or hydroperoxides such as CH 2 -OH-O-O-CH 3 or peroxides obtained by reacting aldehydes and hydrogen peroxide in ether, and organic acids of the type R-CO 3 H, e.g. CH,CO,H, may also be employed.
