Abstract

532,120. Bookbinding. GROAK, J. July 11, 1939, No. 20218. [Class 16] Stationery sheets or webs are secured together by a thermoplastic adhesive of good tenacity applied directly to one or more of the parts, pressure being then applied while the adhesive is in a heated condition. The adhesive may be applied close to the top edge of the sheets, or around apertures provided along one edge. In the latter case, a pressure bar 35, Fig. 4, is carried by rods 37 which carry a cross-head 38 with pins 39 formed wholly or in part of heatconducting material and provided with electrical or other heating means. In a modification, hot air or other gas is blown through the apertures in the sheets, and the adhesive may be permitted to seep over the edges of the sheets. The adhesive may be applied only to certain of the sheets and allowed to seep through the apertures to form the connection. With an edge application. the under sheets may be stepped slightly and adhesive applied to the top overlapping sheet. Sheets with crinkled edges may also be attached by adhesive at the bottoms of the depressions. Sheets may also be secured together at their folds. With webs, one or more pressure and heating rollers or plates may be provided, and a pre-heating chamber may be used. Perforations may be formed in the webs by a heated perforating, punching, or embossing tool or anvil.
