Abstract

563,106. Envelopes. WILLIAMS, W. P. (Standard Register Co.). April 19, 1943, No. 6271. [Class 94 (ii)] [Also in Group XV] A continuous strip of envelopes, which are readilv detachable from each other, is formed from two superposed webs 1, 2, Fig. 3, which are united by adhesive along three margins of each envelope without folding, the strips having marginal perforations, notches, tongues, &c. 4 for engagement by a strip-feeding device for feeding the webs through the envelope-making machine and through printing-mechanism, if desired. The envelope'sections have transverse weakening-lines 3, and the marginal strips may have longitudinal weakening-lines. The strip 1 may be wider than the strip 2, and may be gummed and folded over to form closure flaps. The strip 1 is drawn from a receptacle 11, Fig. 2, and over a table 14 by pin-wheels 16, on which the strip is held by slotted guides 17. A ribbed roller 23 applies transverse lines of adhesive, and rollers 26 apply the longitudinal lines. The second strip 2 is drawn from a receptacle 12, and the strips are pressed together by rollers 30, which may be heated. The upper set of rollers is raised intermittently by a cam to avoid strain on the strip. The margins are broken or cut off by discs 36, unless required for feeding the strip through printing-mechanism, in which case the discs are raised out of action.
