Abstract

531,436. Purifying mercury. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 22, 1939, No. 21327. Convention date, July 23, 1938. [Class 82 (i)] Mercury is purified by evaporating some of the mercury contained in a chamber to effect removal of impurities by the vapour discharged from the chamber. Mercury carrying impurities is fed by a pipe 14 to a chamber 12 communicating through an opening 9 with an adjacent chamber 13 from which it is discharged through a pipe 15. The impurities collecting on the surface in the chamber 12 are removed by creating a vacuum by means of a pump 22 which communicates with the chamber 12 through chambers 20, 16 and pipe 17, impurities being collected on the surface of mercury at the bottom of the chamber 16 and removed therefrom through an opening 29. The purifying means is shown in connection with a plant including a condenser 30 and cooling chambers 36, 38 in which non-condensibles accompanying the mercury vapour are cooled, . the condensed mercury being returned from the chamber 20 to the bottom of the condenser 30.
