Abstract
542,280. Distilling metals. ALLOY PROCESSES, Ltd., and GENTIL. H. L. May 31, 1940, No. 9554. [Class 82 (i)] The condensation of metals is effected in vacuo in a jet condenser by means of a condensing liquid of low vapour pressure such as an oil of high boiling-point, and the condensing liquid and the condensed metal are withdrawn together so that the liquid acts as a seal which prevents the ingress of air. The liquid may be separated from the metal and circulated for re-use. In the apparatus shown, a condenser 18, to which a barometric column 20 is connected, communicates with the reaction chamber 11 and has an outlet 23 to a vacuum pump, cooling liquid being supplied to the condenser through a spray 19. Condensing liquid from a compartment 25 of a sump 21 at the foot of the column 20 is pumped to a cooler 28, and thence by way of a receiver 30 and pump 35 to the spray 19. The condensed metal is recovered from the sump 21. In a modification the barometric column is replaced by a venturi tube. Specifications 527,124, 531,545, and 532,115 are referred to.
