Abstract
176,104. Usher, F. L., and Metcalfe, E. P. Nov. 26, 1920. Essential oils, extracting.-Essential oils and like volatile products are extracted from solid materials, such as sandal wood, by means of a heated gaseous vehicle, such as nitrogen or other inert gas, or an unsaturated vapour which is not condensed on cooling to separate the essential oil, or by means of steam which is condensed in such a way as to generate a further quantity of steam for use in the extraction. In using an inert gas, the gas is circulated in a closed circuit through a heater B, Fig. 1, extraction vessel C, heat-exchangers E, condenser D, and pump A, and back through the heatexchanger E and heater B to the vessel C. The heater may be formed as a jacket surrounding the vessel C and containing a steam coil or an electric heater. In using steam for the extraction, the steam is passed through an extraction vessel S, Fig. 3, and to a condenser E which forms a vacuum evaporator, for example of the Kestner climbing film type. The condensation of the steam and essential oil serve to generate steam at a lower pressure, which is compressed by a pump C and passed into the vessel S. The condensed water is separated from the essential oil in vessel O and may be passed into the well W to be evaporated in the condenser. A float-device v serves to maintain a definite level of water in the condenser.
