<PICT:0822810/III/1> A volatile constituent is separated from a liquid mixture, e.g. pure water is recovered from impure water, by pumping the liquid together with an inert gas such as nitrogen through a system comprising a heat-exchanger 13 and a heater 14 which is supplied with heat from an external source, wherein the volatile constituent is vaporized, followed by a gas/liquid separator 15; and the mixture of hot vapour and inert gas withdrawn from the separator is used to heat the mixture of liquid and gas flowing through the heat-exchanger. The temperature-differential between the heat-exchanger and the heater is selected from a graph. Partial condensation of the vapour occurs in the heat-exchanger. The hot vapour and condensate, discharged from the heat-exchanger 13, may be utilized in the heater 141 of a second effect and then passed to gas/liquid separator 16, as in the apparatus shown, or they may be passed directly to separator 16 which, in the latter case, is cooled. The condensate is withdrawn from separator 16; and the gas is returned to the inlet of the system by blower 12. If the second effect is used, liquid is supplied to it by pump 111. This liquid passes, together with inert gas, via heat-exchanger 131 to heater 141; and the mixture of gas, vapour and liquid is discharged into separator 151. The vapour is condensed from the gas in heat-exchanger 131 and separator 161. Residual liquid is withdrawn from separators 15 and 151. The exhaust from exchanger 13 may be conducted to the heater of another effect, if desired. In an example, 2.75 lbs. of water at 60 DEG F. are admitted to the system with 3.46 lbs. of nitrogen at 80 DEG F., the pressure in the apparatus being 200 p.s.i.g. The water is heated to 325 DEG F. in the heat-exchanger and then to 335 DEG F. in the heater, whereby 2.5 lbs. of steam is formed. A second effect wherein water is vaporized at atmospheric pressure may be employed.
