Abstract
530,649. Life-saving appliances for submarines. DAVIDSON, T. M. June 19, 1939, No. 17791. [Class 68 (i)] For saving life from sunken submarines, provision is made of a bell E which may be spherical, or cylindrical with hemispherical, convex or concave upper and lower ends, the bell having tight doors, J, J<SP>1</SP>, operable from within or without the bell ; fixed below the bell is a frame H comprising rods welded together below to form a cable attachment, the frame serving to guide the bell back into position on the submarine L', and extending at least half the diameter of the bell below same. The bell normally rests on a rubber seal F above a chamber I with one or more tight doors D operable from either side ; pipes A, A<SP>1</SP>, and valves B, B', are provided to admit sea water to the chamber I to equalize pressure, and a valved pipe A<SP>3</SP> for draining the chamber. The cable N passes to a hand or power driven drum M in a watertight casing M' fixed to the chamber I, the handle of the drum having locking means. Above the bell is a small valved pipe C to ascertain whether the surface of the water has been reached, pipe connections K for supply of air to the submarine when the bell is lowered, and telephone connections ; a battery O, folded rubber raft &c. seat P, and windows Q are also provided.
