Abstract
120,102. Davis, R. H. Oct. 31, 1917. Air locks; diving-chambers. - Communication with sunken submarines is established by a diving- bell g in conjunction with an air lock a and means for varying the pressure in the air lock. The air lock may be a separate part attachable inside or outside the conning-tower d of the submarine e, or to any suitable part of the submarine, or secured to the diving-bell; further, the conning- tower may constitute the air lock. For submarines not lying on an even keel, a curved or angled air-lock chamber may be used. Openings other than the conning-tower may be provided for attachment of the air lock; or the latter mav be first fixed to the submarine and an aperture then cut in the latter, as by oxy-acetylene apparatus. The air-lock chamber may be made in sections. The pressure in the air lock may be controlled by valves h, h<1> or by a pump in the diving- bell, or at the surface, or from cylinders of compressed air in the diving-bell or submarine. The Specification also states that if the pressure in the submarine is equal to or greater than that of the surrounding water, access may be had by lower ing a diving-bell over the conning-tower.
