Abstract
294,749. Davis, R. H. June 21, 1927. Diving-chambers; divers' dress.-A diver's chamber consists of a closed vessel a, Fig. 3 with a door, or two juxtaposed doors, through which the diver enters. It is then lowered to the sea bottom, air being supplied by a pipe c. If then the diver desires to leave the chamber. he connects his helmet to the air-supply pipes f. h and opens the door or doors. He may later reenter, close the doors, allow the water to be forced out through a valve l by the air from the pipe c ; the chamber then may be lifted to the surface, and after a period of decompression regulated by an air escape valve, the diver may leave it. Lamps n, windows r, an air-escape valve m, gauges p, and telephonic apparatus o x are fitted, and the chamber may also be supplied with cylinders i, j for suitable compressed gases, e.g., air or oxygen, or oxygen-helium and other mixtures. To enable a diver who has descended in the ordinary way to enter this chamber, his dress is fitted with a three-way valve s, Fig. 5, to enable his helmet to be supplied with air either by his direct air pipe u, or, when that has been disconnected and he has entered the chamber, by the pipes f, h, Fig. 3. If the diver is wearing self-contained diving- apparatus, it will only be necessary to disconnect the telephone connection y before leaving the chamber. A similar or larger decompression chamber may be fitted on the deck of a ship, and the chamber a may be connected to it or placed on it; the diver may then leave the chamber a for the decompression chamber, and thus enable the chamber a to be used by another diver.
