Abstract
369,805. Submarine rescue apparatus. HÍNIG, S., Reichstein, near Konigstein-on- Elbe, and STIRL, M., 49, Wettinerstrasse, Dresden, both in Germany. June 8, 1931, No. 16697. [Class 68 (ii).] The crews of sunken vessels escape by means of a two-part sphere with double doors enabling a buoy to be placed therein ; it is released, with a member of the crew in it, by rotating the upper part of the sphere. The Figure shows a hollow steel ball consisting of two parts, each greater than a hemisphere, the contacting-surfaces of which are ground in to form a watertight joint. One half 10 is above the deck 4, and the other half 1 is stationary, and is secured to the deck by hoods 2 and flanges. In the part 1 are hinged doors 5 with valves 6, and in the part 10 is a container 21. When the vessel has sunk, the flaps 5 and manhole 23 are opened to allow a person to enter the container 21, and are then closed. The part 10 is then rotated by means of the gearing 14 .. 20, until the container 21 floats up. The ball is then closed, pumped out through the valves 6, and a second container 21 is used in the same way. The last man effects the rescuing operations by means of a handle 27.
