Abstract

622,900. Raising sunken ships. IVENS, T. L. April 17, 1947, No. 10231. [Class 68 (ii)] Sunken vessels are raised by feeding small buoyant bodies, e.g. pellets of cork, which may be hollow, into a compartment or compartments of the vessel, by means of a feeding device carried on a service boat and consisting of a casing divided into upper and lower chambers 8, 9, communicating through a flap valve 10, means for supplying pellets to the lower chamber 9, and means for transferring the pellets from the lower to the upper chamber 8 and from thence to the compartment to be filled. The pellets are supplied through a pipe 11 and valve 12 by gravity, or water or air pressure, and when chamber 9 is full, water from a pressure supply is admitted through the pipe 15 to sweep the pellets through valve 10 into the chamber 8, the drain valve 19 being closed. The transfer from the chamber 8 through the valve 13 and pipe 5 to the sunken vessel is effected by water under pressure which is admitted through the pipe 14. A new admission of pellets to the chamber 9 is made during the emptying of the chamber 8, the drain valve 19 then being open.
