Abstract
378,622. Buoyant lifesaving chambers. GNIWODDA, F., Sandkrug, near Lauenburg, Germany. July 20, 1931, No. 20733. [Class 68 (i).] A lifesaving buoy for a submarine comprises a hollow body 1 of circular or oval horizontal section with a removable cover 2 secured by screws 14, and doors 4, 5, one or more rubber packing rings 8 being normally forced by screws 11 and spreaders 10 against the surface 12 of the submarine. In a modification, the packing is effected by inflatable rubber tyres, and in each case, the surface 12 may be grooved to receive the packing. Bolts, toggles, &c. may assist in holding the buoy and are controlled from within the submarine. One or more valved pipes 21 may admit water below the buoy and a screw 18 is provided to lift the buoy from its supports 17. A compartment 22 with door 23 preferably receives the buoy ; after freeing the buoy, a plate 25, Fig. 2, may be lifted against a packing 26 by means of screws 24 driven by hand gearing 27 .. 30, and water may then be removed from the chamber 22. If the buoy is small it may be pulled back to the submarine by a winch 33 and cable 32.
