Abstract
310,145. Panzacchi, E. G., Chiozza, D. E., and Roncallo, G. March 9, 1928. Sunken objects, indicating position of; sunken ships, raising.-Salvage apparatus for raising sunken vessels consists of a buoy 7 comprising two spherical parts 26, 27, and carrying a reel 8, a rope 9 being doubly-wound round the reel and looped round a reel 3 fitted in a well &c. 1 in the vessel to be salved, the well being normally closed by the buoy. A further reel 4 is arranged in the well and carries airsupply hose 5, the end of the latter being connected to the rope 9. When the ship sinks, or the submarine goes below its normal depth, hydrostatic pressure in a pipe 12 opens a spring- pressed valve 14 and water floods the well 1 and flows through a pipe 15 to depress a spring-pressed piston 16 and thereby move a wedge 6 to free the buoy which rises to the surface; in a submarine, the piston 16 also actuates a valve 25 to admit compressed air from storage cylinders to the buoyancy chambers to raise, or assist in raising, the vessel. When the buoy is picked up by a rescue vessel, the rope 9 is operated as in Fig. 5, to raise the hose 5 for delivery of air from the surface to the sunken vessel; afterwards, the rope 9 is operated to pass a lifting rope 30, Fig. 8, round the reel 3 in the sunken vessel. Prismatic reflectors 28 are provided on the buoy.
