Abstract

530,223. Piston, stuffing-box, and joint-making packing. GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and LISLE, W. G. June 30, 1939, No. 19158. [Classes 122 (i), 122 (iii) and 122 (v)) In packing for plungers, pistons, fluid-tight joints &c. in which an indiarubber &c. ring is located in a groove in one of the co-operating surfaces, the ring is deformed during assembly of the parts, so as completely to fill the groove, and the clearance between the surfaces is locally enlarged on one or both sides of the groove, so as to increase the area on which the fluid pressure can act. A ring 7, Fig. 1, of synthetic rubber, of slightly smaller internal diameter than the plunger 9 to be sealed, has initially a small clearance in the axial direction in the groove 10. The inner surface of the ring projects slightly before assembly, and it may have a chamfered outer surface 11 On insertion of the plunger, the ring is deformed, so as to fill the groove. The clearance on the pressure side of the ring is enlarged by an annular groove 12, so that the pressure is augmented and the deformation of the ring is increased. The enlarged clearance 14, Fig. 2, may lead into the actual pressure space 15, and a port 16 may lead to the pressure space from the bottom of the groove.
