Abstract

529,972. Discharge lamps. BOSCH, F. J. G. VAN DEN. May 31, 1939, No. 16610/38. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] A discharge lamp contains a rare gas or gases together with nitrogen and hydrogen, the quantity of hydrogen being of the order of 3 per cent of the combined amount of nitrogen and hydrogen. The rare gas may be, for example, neon, helium, krypton or argon or mixtures thereof, the combined amount of nitrogen and hydrogen in the case of neon being of the order of 20 to 28 per cent of the total gaseous content and 12 to 20 per cent in the case of argon. Thus, the combined nitrogen and hydrogen when neon is used may be 20 per cent and 28 per cent respectively for a 110 and a 220 volt lamp and where argon is used the nitrogen and hydrogen content may be 12 and 20 per cent for these voltages respectively. Forms of lamps are shown having two overlapping spaced rod-like and wire electrodes, and alternating spaced parallel rod-like electrodes, a resistance being mounted within the lamp in series with one of the electrodes in each case. One or both of the electrodes may be coated with an emitting substance, such as barium carbonate.
