Abstract
529,596. Titanium pigments. BRITISH TITAN PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., ANCRUM, R. W., and OPPEGAARD, A. G. May 24, 1939, No. 15471. Addition to 479,072. [Class 95] In the manufacture of white titanium pigments by hydrolytic precipitation from titanium sulphate solutions and subsequent calcination in the presence of an antimony compound in an amount corresponding to 0.1 per cent. or more of antimony calculated on the titanium dioxide content, the antimony compound is added prior to or during the precipitation of the hydrated titanium compound and the precipitation is effected from an unconcentrated solution of titanium sulphate, i.e. a solution containing titanium sulphate in concentration less than the equivalent of 180 gms. T 1 O 2 per litre. The antimony may be added during the precipitation, or, preferably, to the titanium ore prior to or during its convertion into the sulphate solution. Specified antimony compounds which may be used are the oxides, tartar emetic, stibnite, valentinite, senarmontite and cervantite. In general, the proportion of antimony added before or during the precipitation step should not exceed 10 per cent. Conditioning agents, e.g. potassium sulphate or carbonate, and also a small amount of phosphoric acid or a phosphate, may be added prior to calcination. Examples are given. Specification 479,072 is referred to.
