Abstract
1,254,208. Titanium dioxide pigments. FABRIQUES DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE THANN ET DE MULHOUSE. 24 Feb., 1969 [5 March, 1968], No. 9865/69. Heading C1N. In the production of rutile TiO 2 , an aqueous suspension of rutile seeds is added to an aqueous solution of titanium sulphate which is then hydrolysed; the resulting TiO 2 -hydrate gel is washed, and further rutile seed suspension, together with a zinc compound (0À1-2% as ZnO), an alkali metal salt (0À1-1% as K 2 O) and phosphoric acid or a water-soluble phosphate (0À2-0À8% as P 2 O 5 ) are added to the gel, which is then dried and calcined until it is substantially completely converted to rutile TiO 2 . Percentages are by weight based on the TiO 2 content of the washed gel. The two seed additives are preferably prepared by different methods, e.g. by hydrolysis of TiCl 4 and by acidification of sodium titanate. The total amount of rutile seed added may be 1-6 wt. per cent of the TiO 2 content of the washed gel. In examples, the titanium sulphate is derived from ilmenite, and the additives are ZnSO 4 , ZnO, K 2 CO 3 and NH 4 H 2 PO 4 . The hydrated gel may be additionally purified by contact with acid in presence of a titanous reducing salt. Reference is made to Specification 990,419.
