Abstract

1,204,601. Acicular rutile TiO 2 . E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 19 March, 1968 [21 March, 1967; 28 June, 1967], No. 13319/68. Heading C1N. Acicular rutile TiO 2 particles are prepared by calcining at 725-1000‹ C. for ¢-10 hrs. a mixture of (a) TiO 2 , (b) NaCl or a mixture of at least 50 mole per cent NaCl with at least one other alkali metal chloride or sulphate, and (c) an oxy-phosphorus compound, the wt. ratio of b : a being 0À05 : 1 to 2 : 1 and of b : c being 5 : 1 to 130 : 1 (based on the P content), then leaching the product to remove soluble salts. The product particles have a diameter of 0À01- 0À5 Á and a length: diameter ratio of 3 : 1 to 50 : 1. The other salt in (b) may be KCl, Na 2 SO 4 , or K 2 SO 4 , with minor amounts of Na or K bromides or iodides. (c) may be Na 3 PO 4 , Na 2 HPO 4 , NaH 2 PO 4 , Na 4 P 2 O 7 , NaPO 3 , Na 5 , P 3 O 10 , K 3 PO 4 , K 2 HPO 4 , KH 2 PO 4 , KPO 3 - H 3 PO 4 , H 3 PO 3 , H 4 P 2 O 5 , H 4 P 2 O 7 , HPO 3 , P 2 O 3 , P 2 O 5 , NH 4 H 2 PO 4 , (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 , or monocresyl phosphate. (a) may be (i) the rutile seed described in U.S. Specification 2,479,637 for use in sulphate hydrolysis, which may be partially dehydrated by freeze drying or heating at 110‹ C. or may be calcined at 500-700‹ C.; (ii) TiO 2 produced by sulphate hydrolysis using the rutile seed of (i), which TiO 2 is then washed, acid treated to remove Cr and V, dried at 110- 150‹ C. and calcined at 600-900‹ C. until 10-60% is rutile; (iii) a wholly anatase precipitate which converts to rutile on calcination; or (iv) a mixture of a nucleant rutile TiO 2 having a particle size of 0À01-0À2 Á obtained by pyrolytic TiCl 4 oxidation or by hydrolysis of TiCl 4 followed by calcination, and a less stable nutrient which may be anatase or rutile obtained by hydrolysis of Ti sulphate or chloride. (b) and (c) may be dried at 150‹ C. and ground, mixed well with (a) and pelleted. Calcining may be effected in air containing water vapour. The product is then leached with water, filtered, and dried at 150‹ C.
