Abstract
1435392 Coated CrO 2 MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 24 May 1973 [24 May 1972 9 March 1973] 24950/73 Heading C1A Ferromagnetic CrO 2 particles are coated with one or more insoluble or sparingly soluble compounds selected from salts having a MoO 4 <SP>2-</SP>, WO 4 <SP>2-</SP> or PO 4 <SP>3-</SP> anion, salts having a Mg, Zn, Ce, La, Fe, Mn or Co cation, and oxides, hydrated oxides or hydroxides of Si or Ti. Exemplified salts are La 2 (MOO 4 ) 3 , BaMoO 4 , MgWO 4 , CaWO 4 , Mn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , Pb 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , Zn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 and AlPO 4 , which are obtained by double decomposition of a water soluble metal compound with the corresponding Na molybdate &c., followed by neutralization with NaOH, in an aqueous slurry of the CrO 2 . The deposit is present in amounts of 0À1-25% wt. of particles. The deposit may further contain oxide, hydroxide or hydrated oxide of Sb and one or more compounds of Al, Ca, Sr, Ba or Pb. Exemplified oxides are SiO 2 , TiO 2 , and mixtures of Si with Al and Ti with Al, which are obtained by hydrolysis of H 2 SiF 6 , TiOSO 4 or Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 with NaOH, or by reaction of Na silicate with Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , in the aqueous CrO 2 slurry. The particles may then be washed, and dried at 110‹ C. or 250‹ C. In Example 11, SiCl 4 is added to a slurry of humidified CrO 2 in hexane and the slurry evaporated to dryness. The initial CrO 2 particles may be modified with La 2 O 3 , and may be obtained as described in Specification 1,426,526.
