Abstract

White titanium pigments are prepared by the calcination of a mixture of precipitated and washed hydrated titanium oxide with an amount of an antimony compound corresponding to less than ,1 per cent of antimony, calculated on the titanium dioxide content. The antimony may be added as antimony trioxide or as tartar emetic, and at any time prior to the calcination, i.e. to the titanium hydrate pulp, to the titanium solution before precipitation of the titanium hydrate, or to the titanium ore before dissolving in acid. Other "conditioning agents" such as phosphoric acid, phosphates, fluorine compounds, soluble alkali metal compounds, boric acid and borates, and also extenders such as barium or calcium sulphate, may be present. White pigments are thus obtained which may have a pure neutral tone or a slightly bluish tone.
