Abstract

Composite titanium pigments are produced by heating titanium sulphate solutions in the presence of fillers, such as silica or silicic acid, barium or calcium sulphate, and of titanium oxide nuclei prepared as described in Specification 388,978 by heating solutions containing 30--60 grams of titanium oxide and 5--60 grams of sulphuric acid per litre. Alternatively, the titanium sulphate solution may be heated with the filling materials till 1--5 per cent of the titanium oxide is precipitated, and the precipitation is then continued in the presence of nuclei formed from a basic solution (that is, one in which the ratio of titanium to sulphuric acid is greater than in the formula Ti(SO4)2), or, when finely-divided fillers are to be used, part of such a basic solution is heated till 3 per cent of the titanium is precipitated, the fillers and the remainder of the solution are added, and the precipitation is then completed. Specification 387,720 also is referred to.
