Abstract

528,511. Drying tobacco. GALLAHER, Ltd., and AMPTHILL, BARON. March 29, 1939, No. 9860. [Class 34 (ii)] Tobacco is dried, during passage through a rotary inclined drum 10 fitted with vanes 16 which repeatedly lift the tobacco and allow it to fall freely upon a heated surface 18. The lateral inclination of this surface may be varied by a worm gear 20, and the heating may be effected by gas, steam, or electricity. Alternatively, the surface may be water-cooled; or it may be provided with louvre-like openings through which cold, dry, air is passed An adjusting screw 26 varies the inclination of the drum, and humid air is withdrawn through a duct 44.
